a) Optical image of a silver nanowire. b) Fluorescent image of semiconductor quantum dots around nanowire. c) Red circle denotes laser excitation spot. d) Red circle is the location of laser excitation. The bright white spot in the red circle is the emission from the quantum dots. Energy transfer from the quantum dot to the nanowire leads to the generation of propagating surface plasmons. This can be inferred from the light radiating out the ends of the nanowire (green circles). e-f) Laser light coupled into the end of the nanowire excites propagating surface plasmons along the nanowire. Through energy transfer, quantum dots along the nanowire are excited and emit light. [Wei et al., 2009]
