I)Laser light focused at the end of a nanowire can generate surface plasmons that travel down the nanowire and couple out the end as light. II) The excitation energy of a quantum dot generates surface plasmons in the nanowire. III) Surface plasmons excite a quantum dot resulting in quantum dot emission. [Wei et al., 2009]
