Research rotation project plan for trainees

Our Program instituted a new policy regarding the research rotation experience required of each student in a field well outside their present expertise. Previously we had been rather "loose" about what it could be and when it could be done, but now we require that by the end of his/her second year a student must present for approval a plan as to exactly what the rotation project will be and how/when it will be completed by the end of the the third year. This has also led to the faculty better defining and advertising possible rotation projects as a starting list from which students can choose. And it has meant that students no longer procrastinate doing their projects until late in their graduate career, when they need to be focusing on their thesis research.
