Fellow Andrew Somerville, Dept of Anthropology, completed his IGERT internship in Mexico working with two NGOs to collect soil samples at archaeological sites in southern Zacatecas. From these samples he then extracted pollen, diatoms and macrobotanical remains. He applied his skills with stable isotope analysis to reconstruct ancient human diets from bone tissue and learned new skills. His research studies how ancient cultures adapted or failed to adapt to climate change.
