Trainee provides technical expertise to "The Last Pictures" project

iQuISE IGERT trainee Adam McCaughan is a proficient practitioner of photolithography, which is employed in the fabrication of many quantum information devices, such as ion traps and single-photon detectors. In an effort to demonstrate these technical skills to an audience outside of the immediate scientific community, he also used them to assist a visiting artist to MIT. The project that Adam provided technical expertise on was known as "The Last Pictures," and the artist (Trevor Paglen) visited MIT to work in the cleanroom with Adam. Together they fabricated an "artifact" for posterity, a silicon wafer etched at the micron-scale with an array of pictures from human history. The project as a whole reached out to an extremely large and broad audience, with articles appearing in the New York Times and Science, among many other online and print media.
