Colloquium series and research showcase provide opportunities for trainees

Through our colloquium series and research showcase, trainees are given a number of opportunities to learn about significant research in other fields, to explore possibilities for their own work. Our colloquia cover a range of disciplines, so speakers are asked to provide a paper in advance of their talk. Trainees meet with the faculty host to discuss the paper, asking questions and developing a context. Post-talk, trainees and associates meet privately with the speaker, a smaller group of trainees have lunch with the speaker, talking informally, pursuing specific insights. To supplement this exposure to work outside the university, we facilitate collaboration locally through the research showcase/poster session. Trainees not only learn more about each others' work, they are introduced to faculty and graduate student researchers from across the university, inviting unexpected and productive collaborations.
