Drug release research leads to patent application and awards

G Tolia’s work with using silicone adhesive membrane to improve oral delivery has identified a novel mechanism for drug release from matrices. High ion hindrance, viscoelastic, and cohesive properties of silicone adhesive membrane were found to be useful to minimize the effect of pH and mechanical stress on drug release in the gastro-intestinal tract. Two manuscripts with his advisor Dr Li and international collaborators G. Garbacz and W. Weitschies were submitted to peer-reviewed journals: Pharmaceutical Research and European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics. This research work received the International Pharmaceutical Excipient Council (IPEC-Americas) Student Award and University of Cincinnati Research award in 2011. A US patent application was filed based on GT’s research work. GT presented part of his research at Controlled Release Society and American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientist annual meetings in 2010 and 2011 as poster and soapbox podium presentations.
