Oil and gas development in Artic Alaska

Gary Kofinas, UAF faculty member and Co-PI of the RAP IGERT, with IGERT students received the Secretary of Interior’s Partnerships in Conservation Award for a study completed with rural communities of Interior Alaska and North Slope Alaska. The project, “The Study of Sharing to Assess the Vulnerability of Communities to Oil and Gas Development in Arctic Alaska, was funded by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management and undertaken in close collaboration with three Alaska Native villages. IGERT students and local research associates worked in teams to complete the studies’ interviews. The project had an overall 92% response rate from households in the three communities and is completing a ground-breaking analysis of the structure and dynamics of the mixed cash-subsistence economies of village households.
