Advance in image resolution for soft x-ray microscopes

A significant advance in image resolution and capabilities for desktop soft x-ray microscopes was shown by a group of COSI-IGERT participant at the University of Colorado Boulder. This advance will enable widespread applications in nanoscience and nanotechnology only achievable until now by using synchrotron facilities. Using 13nm high harmonic beams, they demonstrated a record 22nm spatial resolution for any tabletop x-ray microscope. They have also shown that unique information about the sample can be obtained by extracting 3-D information at very high numerical apertures. These findings appeared in the journal Optics Express.
