Outreach with Greenlandic high school students

During the 2011 Greenland Field Seminar, we met Greenland’s science curriculum coordinator for high school students. We learned that Greenlandic students would benefit from 1) seeing young people talking about science, and 2) exposure to inquiry based, hands-on science. As a result, a new student-driven group project was added to the Spring IGERT core course on “Polar Science, Ethics, and Policy.” Trainees worked in interdisciplinary groups to produce 3-minute videos, lesson guides, and a list of supporting resources (articles, web links) on basic climate change science placed in a context relevant to Greenland. All elements of the project will be available on our website and IGERT.org. This project was enabled by science learned in the introductory course that could then be placed in a real world context based on IGERT student interactions with young Greenlanders. This project demonstrated achievements in teamwork and framing and communicating interdisciplinary science.
