Weekly meetings promote collaboration

Weekly meetings provided opportunities for collaboration among the IGERT Trainees and Affiliates. During year one, the weekly meetings provided a framework for a systematic exchange of information between trainees and affiliates. However, minimal collaboration was observed between trainees and affiliates until work began with the University United Methodist Church (UUMC) Energy Usage study. The UUMC project was introduced to trainees and affiliates in spring 2011. An initial meeting between UUMC representatives and IGERT trainees and affiliates established project objectives. Five working groups were created among the trainees and affiliates; each of identified a team lead who coordinated data collection from city and county utilities (electric and gas) and data analysis using UUMC energy consumption reports based on comparison of historical and current bills reporting usage.
