New "smart home in a box" kit developed

All of our IGERT Trainees have participated in designing, installing, and/or testing our smart home testbeds. From this group effort we have now collected 41 smart home datasets from 31 different smart environment physical residences. The datasets contain sensor events that were generated while participants performed scripted activities or lived in the homes and performed normal daily routines.

We have designed robust activity recognition software that generalizes models over multiple sites and multiple residents. The software achieves a recognition accuracy of over 85% for at least 10 activities, even in new homes where no training data is available. We are using this software along with our smart home design to create a "Smart home in a box" kit for individuals to install in their own homes or the homes of friends and family members.
