Chewing efficiency and dental morphology of humans

NYU Trainee Myra Laird completed a NYCEP internship (independent study) with CUNY/IGERT faculty member Herman Ponter where she learned techniques in experimental biomechanics. She was able to design and implement an original study that examined the chewing efficiency and dental morphology of human subjects. The study demonstrated that individuals with larger molars were capable of more efficient chewing. The results of the investigation were presented at the 2012 American Association of Physical Anthropology annual meetings, and a paper for publication in a peer review journal is currently in preparation.
