Resource media communications training

Held February 22nd-23rd, 2012, a Resource Media Communications Training workshop first exposed students to video and print examples of when scientists communicate well and when they don’t. The workshop then transitioned into practicing how to talk about your research in ways that connect to people’s lives and current events or headlines. Mock interviews and drills were videotaped and critiqued so that students could see first-hand where they needed improvement. Students overwhelmingly reported that the workshop made them feel more comfortable and confident when talking to stakeholders, reporters and policymakers and it also provided key steps that students could take to prepare for public outreach.
