Trainee Achievements

IGERT trainee participates in international internship

An important educational outcome of this IGERT reporting period includes the achievement of IGERT Trainee Andrew Widmer. Widmer is our first student to participate in an international internship and to collaborate with an international university. All of our IGERT students are required to participate in an internship during their second year of study as part of their educational objectives. Widmer interned at Tokyo Polytechnic University in Tokyo, Japan, in order to conduct wind pressure tests on building models in the TPU wind tunnel. Widmer has been developing and testing building models here at the Texas Tech wind tunnel. In order to obtain more diverse sets of data, these models traveled with him overseas to be tested in a different type of wind tunnel facility. The data will be used in his dissertation research. Widmer’s internship at TPU has opened the door to other wind science and engineering doctoral students traveling to TPU to conduct internationally collaborative research.
