Simulation of microfluidic impingement on biofilms

IGERT trainee Leo Zheng of the Sammakia group at SUNY Binghamton has extended a simulation of microfluidic impingement on biofilms to the treatment of porous solids, making the simulation especially relevant to the design of flexible electronics smart bandages, where arrays of microfluidic jets remove biofilm colonies, preventing infection and allowing healing. He has also cultured biofilms on flexible substrates of both polyimide and PET substrates; sensor designs for these combined microfluidic/sensing platforms have been investigated in collaboration with IGERT trainees working in the Sadik group at SUNY Binghamton. The effort on biofilms is also leveraging the extensive knowledge and facilities of the Binghamton University Biofilm group, especially with respect to bacterial cultures and biosafety.
