Greenland Field Seminar developed

Development of the Greenland Field Seminar came to fruition in 2010 with an intensive 5-week program. Trainees participated in studies to reconstruct past climate from lake sediment coring and glacial feature mapping, examined environmental controls over plant species diversity and growth, and worked out sampling regimes to understand landscape scale patterns of soil carbon storage in Kangerlussuaq; snow chemistry and atmospheric interaction studies at Summit Camp; and the interactions between polar science, policy, and the ethical conduct of research in Nuuk, where they were invited by the Government to give public presentations at the Katuaq Cultural Center. Trainees met with Deputy Foreign Minister Inuuteq Holm Olson and ICC International President Aqqaluk Lynge. Trainees visited Nuuk BASIC Field Station hosted by the Institute of Natural Resources. The Greenland Field Seminar proved to be an effective culmination of the two IGERT core courses on polar science, policy, and ethics.
