Achievement

Program faculty in biomedical engineering and neurosurgery discovered for the first time electrocorticographic (ECoG) correlates of speech processing during audition and phonation. Drs Eric Leuthardt, Daniel Moran, and Dennis Barbour have worked with graduate students to develop ECoG into a novel tool for brain-computer interfaces and basic neuroscience. In 2011 Drs Leuthardt and Barbour determined electrical correlates to spoken sounds, vowels, and consonants. This work was published in two papers in the Journal of Neural Engineering.
