Student-organized Bioinformatics Symposium

The IGERT sponsored, 2009 Student-Organized Bioinformatics Symposium was coordinated by Matt Schu, Bill Riehl, and IGERT trainee Eric Franzosa, although the entire student body was invited to provide input. The theme "Bioinformatics and Human Health" was a runaway favorite among students. Five speakers from academia and industry spoke on the role of bioinformatics in human health research. The Symposium included a student research poster session, along with breaks for informal discussion. Speakers were: Manolis Kellis, Assoc. Prof. at MIT affiliated with the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and the Broad Institute; Boris Tabakoff, Prof. and Chair, Dept. of Pharmacology at the University of Colorado, Denver; Dietrich Stephan, Co-founder and Chief Science Officer of Navigenics, Inc. and Chair of the NIH Neuroscience Microarray Consortium; Roy Kishony, Assoc. Prof. of Systems Biology at Harvard Medical School; and Jorge Conde, President and CEO of Knome, Inc.
