Achievement

Using travel funding provided through the CHANGE-IGERT, trainee Megan Raby conducted archival research in summer 2009 at Harvard University as well as Harvard's Arnold Arboretum. Using that research, Ms. Raby applied for, and recently received a Smithsonian Institution Predoctoral Fellowship for the summer with the Smithsonian Instituion Archives and the National Museum of American History.  The Smithsonian fellowship will allow her to study archival records related to the history of field station at Barro Colorado Island, Panama (known today as the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute).  This research is part of her larger dissertation on tropical biology in the 20th century Caribbean, with a focus on US-Latin American scientific relations and the history of ideas about biological diversity.
