Designing brain-computer interfaces

IGERT co-PI Todd Coleman's group, including IGERT Fellow Christopher Quinn, developed a feedback information-theoretic approach to designing brain-computer interfaces that explicitly takes into account both the inherent uncertainty in measurement and interpretation, and the important role of sensory feedback.  The policy for the user to implement is remarkably simple cognitively yet theoretically optimal.  Experimentally, we have achieved reliable text spelling solely from EEG signals, and remote tele-operation of an unmanned aircraft flying at a fixed altitude using only noisy binary EEG commands.
