Trainees file patent

A direct outcome from UPitt's IGERT developed course, Engineering Sustainability Capstone Definition, is the patent filing by IGERT trainees, Michael Ikeda and Charles Jewart, related to their collaborative research idea of remote monitoring of cold-weather pipelines. This course is an inter-disciplinary, team-based Ph.D.-level capstone design course sequence required by IGERT students and other interested graduate students. The course requires the application of rigorous analytical thinking and research investigation techniques in order to address a real-world, complex problem, such as the problem pursued by Michael Ikeda and Charles Jewart. Further, the course encourages and discusses innovation and entrepreneurship, as one instructor is an entrepreneur who specializes in green chemistry.
