About Me

I am a Professor in the Department of Natural Resources Science at the University of Rhode Island. I teach classes in GIS and landscape ecology. I am the co-PI on the URI Coastal Institute IGERT project which is now entering its 5th year.

My research involves using GIS to address issues in coastal conservation and natural resource management. My students and lab associates study how land use change impacts coastal ecosystems, how we conserve and steward landscapes to ensure delivery of ecosystem services, and how GIS can support resource management by the National Park Service and other state and federal agencies. My early academic training was in field mammalogy. I have studied and published on rodent and bat ecology and behavior in South America, the Caribbean, and various ecosystems in the US. For fun, I support my local economy by buying trout lures and flies then sacrificing them to bushes and trees. I enjoy jogging (plodding actually), kayaking, bicycling, and camera trapping wildlife. I have a teenage daughter who is always one-step ahead of me. I spend a lot of my personal time working with local conservation organizations like the TNC, my town’s land trust, and my local watershed organization to hopefully make a difference on a local scale.
