Erosion and spatial patterns in the vegetation at the WISeNet Experiment site in Venice, Italy

This image gives a snap shot of the interaction between vegetation, sediments, and ocean movement, which all affect the marshes in the Venice Lagoon. In the background you can also see the spatial patterns in the vegetation. The formation of these patterns is related to the elevation above the mean sea level. So an important question is: which came first? Did the vegetation change how the soil eroded, causing a change in elevation? Or did the vegetation form because of the patterns in elevation? Additionally, what effects will the rising sea level have on the vegetation, and how will this affect the erosion?
