Jay Hodgson (right) and Nelson Ham (left) are shown taking sediment cores from the bottom of Jewel Lake, which is a proglacial lake in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, Alaska. The cores are being used to recreate past climate conditions and to evaluate the rate of change in the current climate. Jay is an IGERT trainee at The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Nelson is an associate professor of geology at St. Norbert College, De Pere, Wisconsin.
