TransitGenie: a personalized, real-time transit navigation service

Achievement/Results

Dr. Eriksson and his team of students have created a personalized, real-time transit navigation service, called TransitGenie. TransitGenie plans public transit using a combination of route schedules and real-time bus tracking data. This helps transit users find the best route to their destination, regardless of frequent delays and other irregularities. TransitGenie is the first step in a far-reaching research program designed to improve the utility and performance of public transit. Developed at the University of Illinois at Chicago, TransitGenie is currently only available for the Chicago region, but the team plans to expand to other metropolitan areas in the future. The iPhone client for TransitGenie is available for download from the iTunes App Store, adding approximately 100 new TransitGenie users every day.

This work was supported by the National Science Foundation’s Integrative Graduate Education and Research (IGERT) and the Transportation Research Board’s Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis (IDEA).
