2013 IGERT Video and Poster Competition: Seeking faculty judges

Description:

We are pleased to announce that we will have 124 IGERT programs with presenters or teams of presenters participating in this year’s IGERT Video and Poster Competition. Now that we have received all of their submissions, we are seeking 50 faculty volunteers to judge in this competition. All faculty, PIs, and coPIs should be receiving an email inviting them to participate.

If students and program coordinators know faculty members who would be interested in participating, they are also welcome to sign up by completing the Judge Volunteer Form by April 2 using the following link:

Additional information for Judges in the 2013 Video and Poster Competition:

Judges will be expected to review 12-13 presentations, each of which will include a poster and a 2-3 minute video. Last year judges spent an average of 4.5 hours online during the three days, and, in general, found the experience to be extremely positive. Please, volunteer only if you can commit 4-5 hours online during this three-day period.

Last year over 97% of judges said they would encourage colleagues to take part in the competition. Comments from judges in past competitions included:

  • I think it is a wonderful opportunity for faculty members and students to see the cutting-edge research that is going on at the interfaces of various disciplines.

  • The video was a wonderful addition. I think it’s almost a necessary component in a virtual competition. It represents another outlet of creativity for the students, and a new presentation venue.

  • I learned quite a bit from the posters, and stretching myself in that way is part of why I engage in integrative research.

  • I quite enjoyed being a part of the on-line community of scholars. The way the judging rubric was set up was fantastic! It not only simplified the judging experience, but enabled me to be fair and systematic across all presentations.
  • It was pretty straightforward and not a huge burden.

  • I was able to browse the posters at my leisure and the online interaction was great.

The judges’ schedule for the competition is as follows:

  • Tuesday, May 21st: browse all 12-13 posters and videos in your judging group and post a query online to each presenter

  • Wednesday, May 22nd: review presenters’ replies to judges’ queries and begin filling out the online judging rubric (where you will rate the poster, video, and the trainees’ replies to queries)

  • Thursday, May 23rd: complete rubrics for all presenters in your judging group and submit online by 10pm EST

  • Friday, May 24th: Winners announced online

There will be 10 judging groups and 5 judges per group. The top 2 posters in each group – based on the cumulative scores submitted by the judges – will be awarded prizes.
