About the Webinar

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is a leader in transferring technology and ideas into the marketplace. Technology transfer successes at UW-Madison have been made possible in part through the activities of the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, the University Research Park, the Office of Corporate Relations, and strong school/college engagement in technology transfer activity. UW-Madison researchers have strengths in many areas that have potential for commercialization. A few such areas include medical devices, physical sciences and engineering, pharmaceuticals, clean technology, agriculture, computer science and information technology, and more. UW-Madison is one of the most comprehensive universities in the nation, providing the opportunity to bring together experts in a variety of disciplines to create innovative solutions. This presentation will highlight how UW-Madison entities work collaboratively with each other and with the private sector to bring about commercialization of advances associated with UW research.

About the Webinar Series

In 2012, a new schedule of webinars is lined-up with themes on specific university initiatives and will be expanded to feature issues that arose at the Presidents-Investors Summit in January 18. The updated webinar content will provide a venue for universities to present their programs and for other universities to learn from their peers on strategies that will advance their own programs to contribute to the President’s university research commercialization initiative.

The “President Obama’s Initiative on University Research Commercialization: How Universities Plan To Respond” webinar series will have vice-presidents of research at leading universities highlight specific plans for following through on this commitment, in direct response to the President’s call to action.

On September 16, 2011, President Obama announced new steps that will help America’s universities and research labs convert ideas into new products, create startups, expand the economy and create high-value 21st century jobs. In coordination with the Administration, 135 university presidents committed to working more closely with industry, investors, and agencies to bolster entrepreneurship, encourage university-industry collaboration, and advance the nation’s social and economic interests. The commitments are aimed at helping achieve the President’s goal of strengthening commercialization of the nearly $148 billion in annual federally-funded research and development.

Each webinar will feature a university to discuss their commercialization initiatives. A Q&A period will be conducted after the presentations for the remainder of the time.
