IGERT Trainee Video & Poster Competition 2012

Description:

IGERT Trainee Video & Poster Competition 2012

We are excited to announce the 2012 Video and Poster Competition which will take place on May 22nd to May 25th on IGERT.org. This year the competition will include both video and poster components, which reflects an expanding interest in using media to promote the understanding and dissemination of scientific ideas. This year we will also allow projects to have a team of trainees presenting the work, such as a trainee cohort. However, each project must have one lead presenter.

NSF will hold their annual PI meeting May 30 – June 1, 2012. Winners of the online competition will be announced at an awards ceremony during the meeting. The lead presenter from each project will attend the annual meeting.

Eligibility:  Each PI should select one student to be the primary online presenter. (PIs and Project Coordinators should have received an email from NSF requesting the name of a lead presenter. Please submit the name of the presenter no later than Feb. 17th).

Teams of trainees are eligible, but a lead member must be selected. This student will also represent their IGERT at the live meeting in Washington, DC. All active projects are eligible, both those still receiving funding and those with no cost extensions. The trainee (or lead trainee for a team) presenting the poster must be funded or previously funded, and must not have completed degree requirements for graduation by the end of the competition (June 1, 2012). Only one submission per IGERT is allowed. Please review the FAQs for additional details or send questions regarding eligibility to igert-trainee-compe@nsf.gov

Format Change:  The 2012 online competition will include both posters and videos. Each trainee (or team) will be required to submit a 2-3 minute video introducing their poster and  their work to a general audience of scientists and non-scientists.  These videos will replace the audio component of the 2011 competition.

Awards:   25 projects/posters will be chosen as finalists and receive an award of $2,000 per winning poster to support professional development activities of the trainee(s).  Twenty finalists will be selected by faculty judges, four finalists will be selected by a community choice vote, and one finalist will be selected by the general public.  The winners will be announced at the live meeting in Washington, DC.

Details on Judging:
Judges: The judges will be selected from IGERT faculty volunteers. All IGERT faculty registered on IGERT.org will be contacted in the coming weeks and asked if they would like to volunteer. Last year the volunteer judges committed an average of  4 hours of time.  Their feedback was very positive as they felt this was a positive and very engaging experience. If you know of any IGERT faculty members that are not yet registered on IGERT.org, please invite them to join your project now! Judges will choose 20 awardees..

Community Choice: The IGERT community at large – faculty, project coordinators, trainees and alumni – will also have the opportunity to interact with the presenters and to vote for their favorite posters. The top 4 IGERT community favorites will also receive awards. Community choice voting will continue until the first night of the conference, so that members will have a chance to speak with poster presenters in-person before casting their votes online.

Public Vote: In addition, public will decide on one award which will represent the presenter who was most effective in disseminating science to a broad audience.

More Information will be forthcoming.
Visit our IGERT Trainee Video & Poster Competition Group for FAQ’s about the competition. A video with tips on producing video will be added (soon) there as well.
