Workforce Preparation - Geological Society of America Meeting: Call for abstracts/presentations
Description:
Dear IGERT PI,
I would like to bring to your attention the following session at the upcoming Geological Society of America meeting (Minneapolis, October 9-12, 2011). You may find this session to be the ideal place to present some lessons learnt from your IGERT program regarding preparation of future scientists.
CALL: Geo-Workforce Preparation for 21st Century Challenges – GSA 2011 (T. 169)
Marilyn J. Suiter, Lina C. Patino, David Matty, Conveners.
“Tomorrow’s scholars will have to integrate disciplines such as ecology, meteorology, public policy, business, finance, urban planning, agriculture, and public health if they are to solve complex and interrelated environmental and economic problems in concert with climate change” (Bierbaum and Zoellick, Science, (2009)). Difficult decisions lie ahead for our society that will require geoscientists to have the ability to solve complex, multi-disciplinary problems.
How does the geoscience community prepare a workforce that is able to meet energy and environmental challenges? What changes in curriculum are needed to prepare teachers and researchers for the cross-disciplinary demands of global change research and teaching? How can we incorporate economics, business, finance, urban planning, and/or political science effectively in our programs? How will the geoscience community adapt to changing workforce needs?
Please consider submitting an abstract/presentation to this session. If your academic or professional society program activity addresses climate, environmental or sustainability science education, or any of the many multidisciplinary fields becoming increasingly in demand as we move forward in this century, please consider the workforce implications and how your activity plays a role. Please include considerations of data such as student enrollment and degrees, and employment preparation and recruitment. If you are an employer in these sectors, please consider discussing recent trends in your field as well as employment numbers (recent and planned) and employment requirements.
Topics to be addressed include curriculum content, pedagogy, and technology, with data and outcomes. This session will provide a forum to explore existing geoeducation programs and to inform those considering similar pathways.
Sponsors: National Association of Geoscience Teachers; GSA Geoscience Education Division; GSA Geophysics Division.
Technical Program (http://www.geosociety.org/meetings/2011/techPro...): Sessions will be listed in GSA Today and on the GSA website in April.
Abstracts Deadline: 26 July 2011.
Marilyn J. Suiter (and Lina C. Patino and David Matty)
