IGERT trainee receives acclaim for work in data semantics

Ben Adams (CompSci) has received acclaim for his work in data semantics. Common methods for encoding data semantics do not easily accommodate operations of semantic similarity or concept combination. Adams, however, is working to create a knowledge representation framework designed for these operations. Concepts are represented as sets of convex regions spanning geometrical domains. Similarity is represented as function of distance in the spaces, and properties are defined as functions on conceptual regions affording complex concept combinations. Two articles currently under review introduce the conceptual space algebra with formal operations and detail a markup language that is intended to be an exchange format for sharing conceptual spaces in the Semantic Web.
