Governance of rural drinking water resources in Costa Rica

The interdisciplinary student team based in Turrialba, Costa Rica is conducting an in-depth case study in order to explore current and desired options for multi-scale governance of rural drinking water resources in Costa Rica. The team is carrying out its research in the Tuis and Pejibaye river valleys using multiple methods that engage stakeholders from local, regional and national levels. Methods include a participatory watershed characterization, interviews and focus groups. These characterizations will allow the team to understand the main biophysical factors that influence drinking water quality and quantity, as well as how community-based drinking water and wastewater associations manage these biophysical factors and their drinking water provision system.
