Advanced Communication Skills for Science and Engineering course

The course “661.487: Advanced Communication Skills for Science and Engineering” has undergone its third offering this year. The class addresses oral and written communication skills, specifically in delivering a technical talk to a non-technical audience, preparing a grant proposal, writing a publication, and a poster competition. While many of the Trainees find the focus on addressing a generalist (as opposed to a specialized) audience frustrating, they admit that this is a weakness they need to address. The enrollment in the class has grown over time and currently has a majority of students that are not MCS IGERT Trainees, although the course was originally designed for these Trainees. Because of this, we consider the course one of our greatest successes, as it has broad reach across the engineering and science graduate programs at JHU.
