Achievements in geothermal research

Major analysis achievements occurred during the year in three areas: (1) An extensive review of geothermal – biomass co-generation opportunities utilizing infrastructure in Cornell’s extensive distributed power and district heating and cooling system that serves a campus of 30,000 students, faculty, and staff; (2) Comprehensive updating of geothermal well drilling costs using new geothermal drilling data and the extensive set of oil and gas well drilling costs provided by the Joint Association Survey; and (3) Developed a new economic system modeling code GEOPHIRES that enables economic assessments of electric power generation, district heating and co-generation applications for a range of geothermal resource and reservoir operating and financial conditions.
