Chloroplast transformation in duckweed

Trainee Mark Lemos has made significant progress towards the goal of chloroplast transformation in duckweed, leading the effort to sequence and assemble seven chloroplast genomes from aquatic plant species from across the world to be used as references for sequences. In addition, he has nearly completed the necessary vectors for transformation of two fast growing species of duckweed. His ultimate research goal is to transform duckweed chloroplasts for expression of cellulases to be used in biofuels production.
