Trainees and associates receive competitive awards

Several IGERT trainees and associates received competitive awards for their research accomplishments this year. Michael Zimmerman (IGERT associate, with R Jernigan, ISU) received the 2012 Honorable Mention Zaffarano Prize for Graduate Research, presented by ISU's Provost in recognition of extraordinary research productivity (quality and quantity of published dissertation research). Deepak Reyon (IGERT associate, working with D Dobbs, ISU) received the 2012 Research Excellence Award from the Dept of Genetics, Development and Cell Biology. Tonia Schwartz (IGERT trainee, ISU) won a prestigious James S. McDonnell Foundation Postdoctoral Award for Studying Complex Systems. This award is intended to provide students in the final stages of completing a Ph.D. degree more leeway in identifying and securing postdoctoral training opportunities in complex systems research and provides $ 200,000 in funding for two years of postdoctoral research in the laboratory chosen by the trainee.
