Math-Engineering collaboration develop MATLAB toolbox

David Valdman, an IGERT trainee from the Mathematics Department, collaborated with Prof. Megan Valentine of Mechanical Engineering to develop a MATLAB image processing toolbox. The toolbox makes use of new computational algorithms that David developed. It is now used heavily in the Valentine lab for imaging microtubules. A joint paper was written which recently appeared in the Biophysics Journal. The paper outlines the new algorithms and showcases the experimental validation, and then describes the new discoveries made possible by this work. It is unfortunately rare for mathematicians to operate so closely with scientists and engineers, but because the IGERT fellowship is designed to foster this kind of interaction it was encouraged.
