Applications of network virtualization technology in mobile networks

Trainee Russel Ford worked on a separate proposal presented at the I3P Consortium meeting that seeks to investigate applications of network virtualization technology in mobile networks that would allow smaller entities, known as Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO), to enter the industry with fewer requirements for capital and operational capabilities by sharing virtualized network infrastructure provided by incumbent Mobile Network Operators. Cellular carriers, the infrastructure providers, are having to invest enormous sums to scale their networks in order to remain competitive, but are suffering from reduced return-on-investment in the present market. Industry studies have demonstrated that the MVNO model is an attractive solution to recuperating capital expenditures and alleviating operational expenditures by allowing third-party operators to purchase slices of existing network resources.
