Quantifying tremors while performing simple tasks

IGERT Trainee Nathan Darnall participated on a team project for our required Gerontechnology course in which the group designed a sensor system to quantify the amount of tremor exhibited by a patient while performing simple tasks (lifting objects, drawing shapes) with their hands. The project was suggested by our class visitor Dr. Jonathan Carlson, who is a neurosurgeon in Spokane, Washington. Nathan was so motivated by this project that he changed his dissertation topic to focus on this problem. He has already published one journal article based on this work and will perform an internship with Dr. Carlson during the summer of 2012 to test the technology on patients in Dr. Carlson's clinic.
