Research Achievements

Identifying bird songs via bioacoustics

A major area of interdisciplinary research is bioacoustics: the automated analysis of audio data to understand the distribution and behavior of species in natural environments. This project involves collaborations among computer scientists and electrical engineers (Fern, Raich, Wong, Briggs) and ecologists (Betts, Jones, Frey). Novel machine learning algorithms are being developed to automatically identify bird songs at the species and individual level based on several hundred hours of audio recording obtained from thirteen song recorders the HJ Andrews Forest in summer 2009.
