Novel feedback control design method

IGERT fellow Luis Alvergue showed that film cooling problem (film cooling refers to the injection of cool air on the surface of components to protect them from high operating temperatures) can be viewed as a velocity tracking problem and that it can be partially solved by computing a steady velocity field that possesses desirable cooling qualities, then driving the velocity to this steady velocity field by controlling the velocity on the boundary only. In the context of controller design, this method may be viewed as a stabilization problem. We propose a novel feedback control design method to tackle the nonlinearity of fluid flow dynamics based on POD-ROMs (Proper Orthogonal Decomposition)-(Reduced Order Models). The design method aims to not only stabilize the nonlinear dynamics asymptotically but also to maximize the domain of attraction and to ensure nominal performance at each equilibrium.
