Outreach activities provide public service

Outreach activities are an important part of professional development activities in our IGERT program. These activities provide a service to community and allow our students to hone their public communication and interdisciplinary teamwork skills. In the past year our students have logged over 600 student-hours of community service, and have surpassed 2,000 student-hours for our IGERT lifetime. Examples include indoor air demonstration projects at Explore UT, an annual public open house on the UT campus (300+ visitors to our demonstrations), Minority Introduction to Engineering (MITE) Science camp (100 high school students), and the Women in Engineering Program. Our students judge science projects at an elementary school, are working with a middle school to develop an indoor air management plan, and helped a non-profit (Children's Environmental Health Institute) to develop criteria for ranking and educating hotels in terms of reducing children's exposure to toxic contaminants.
