High contrast grating VCSELs

Chris Chase works on several related topics regarding high contrast grating VCSELs. The high contrast grating is a novel mirror structure which allows for quickly tunable VCSEL structures. These devices are very exciting as low cost sources for optical networks. He gave a talk at the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics last June. In January, he presented a poster on his tunable VCSEL work at the Workshop on photonic technologies for access and interconnects at Stanford and tied for best poster award. He presented a poster at the International Nano-Optics Workshop in Sweden/Germany last summer and won 3rd place. The work was also recently published in Optics Express. In addition, he has been collaborating with a group in Germany to design and fabricate a 1325 nm HCG VCSEL with HCG made up of Si on SiO2 spacer. The team fabricated and characterized working devices. Chris gave a talk at the CLEO conference this May on the topic and co-authored a journal paper on the results.
