Developing trainees' oral presentation skills

A key professional development objective is to develop trainee's oral presentation skills and communication of research to interdisciplinary audiences. The IGERT summer institute provides one such training outcome as the students are required each year to present their research to the advisory board which is a mixed (academic, government, industry) audience. Trainees prepare for the summer institute and meeting by reviewing their research and oral presentation format with the IGERT exec committee. The Science Advisory board in their written report commented, "The presentations were very good, especially from the senior cohorts, and it is clear that as the students move through the program that their presentation skills show dramatic improvement."
