General Information on IGERT Grants

IGERT Competition and Award Information and History

  1. How many proposals are received compared to how many awards are eventually given?
In recent years, following the now phased-out two proposal process, IGERT received ~450 preliminary proposals across a wide range of transformative interdisciplinary research and innovative graduate education themes. From these preliminary proposals, ~100 were invited to submit full proposals, from which ~20 awards are given dependent on the funding level of the program. Solicitation 11-533 is the first year letters of intent (LOI) replace the pre-proposal phase. No review process occurs prior to the submission of full proposals. Additionally, only one proposal may be submitted by an institution for a funding round. Panels will be instructed to place 5% of proposals in high, 10% in medium, and the remaining in low. Approximately 18 awards are expected to be made in the upcoming round.

  2. How much money are IGERT grants and what is their duration?
Each IGERT award is up to $3.3M (without a funded international component) or $3.5M (with a funded international component) for 5 years. All IGERT awards are continuing grants.

  3. Where are all IGERT PIs, institutions and projects listed?
On the IGERT Resource Center website follow the links for Find an IGERT. Additionally, all of the IGERTs can be found by doing a search on Awards on the NSF website: http://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/. Do a search by typing IGERT into the field "Search Award For", check "Restrict to Title Only", and check "Active Awards Only". This brings up a list of all active IGERTs with links to the project's lay abstract, which provides information on the project's topic, a description of the project, and the names of the PI and co-PIs.

  4. Where are examples of successful IGERT proposals listed?
All proposals are considered confidential by the NSF and are not posted for public view in any location. Some awardees post their proposals on their web sites. You may contact the individual PI.

  5. How many graduate students are typically supported by an IGERT project? Are these students all accepted in a single year and supported for the duration of the project, or are new students added as the project continues?
All IGERTs accept multiple cohorts of students and fund them for at least 2 years. The total number of graduate student trainees supported depends upon how many fit within your budget, but we suggest mid-20s over the course of an IGERT. If more trainee support is possible, we would certainly encourage that.
