About Me

I’m interested in the rich array of physical phenomena presented by correlated electron systems and am currently using scanning probe microscopy as a means to learn more about these systems. In particular I am focused on LaCoO3(LCO), a prototypical perovskite oxide material used most often in solid oxide fuel cell cathodes. Depending on distortion of the LCO unit cell and choice of dopant, LCO can exhibit superconductivity, giant magnetoresistance and insulator-to-metal and spin state transitions.

Specifically, I am investigating the behavior of local magnetic domain structures in thin films of LCO using magnetic force microscopy. My research seeks to determine the role of strain in producing ferromagnetism in LCO thin films and the effect of strain upon local magnetic domain structure as it changes with temperature and applied magnetic field.
