About Me

I study the effects of the anthropogenic noise on wildlife, where I integrate principles and methodologies across disciplines, including acoustics, oceanography, behavioral ecology, and conservation biology. This integrative approach requires proficiency in acoustic instrumentation, calibration, and analysis, synthesis of large datasets, design of data collection systems and use of statistical modeling. Throughout my research career I have utilized new and emerging technology (e.g. underwater acoustic recorders, bio logging tags, ship tracking systems) to answer ecological questions to address pressing conservation issues. The bulk of my experience is with cetacean species in the California Current Ecosystem, with a particular focus on the impact noise from ocean-based commercial shipping on blue whales.
