Research on Next-Generation Armor Materials

Achievement/Results

A group of faculty and Trainees from Johns Hopkins University’s Modeling Complex Systems IGERT have played a pivotal role in the creation of the new Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute (HEMI). HEMI has secured a $92M 10-year grant from ARL to study armor materials. These recent successes have been the culmination of collaborations and conversations over the last few years, a number of which were initiated by the MCS IGERT program. In fact, half of the HEMI faculty are part of the MCS IGERT, and 4 of the MCS IGERT trainees are doing the multidisciplinary research on multi-scale modeling that is critical to dynamic failure events. The Director ofMore information about the recent launch of HEMI and the grant from ARL may be found at http://eng.jhu.edu/wse/at-the-school/sudden-imp....

Address Goals

The development of HEMI and the support from ARL is a major mechanism for promoting multi-scale mechanics in the context of security.
